Studies in Jazz, Theory or Composition
The construction of music is an art in itself, and can't always be fully covered as part of a performance based lesson.
A theory/composition lesson entails working with creating harmony, learning common musical conventions, and how to elaborate on them. Through knowledge of theory, a young composer discovers what sounds he or she likes, and how to use them artistically to achieve his or her goal.
In lessons, students will work with ear training like in a regular piano lesson, but will also learn to dictate (transcribe) what they have heard onto sheet music. They may then be given the assignment to use the concept they have learned to recognize in a composition, and in doing so imbue what was once just a word on in the glossary with a life it could only have obtained from them!
We also offer instruction on how to read jazz lead sheets and improvise using complex harmony.
Help your young composer find and refine his or her own voice!
